St. Joseph Parish in Oil City founded a food pantry and clothes closet in the 1990s. As they grew, these ministries moved in 2005 to the former Assumption School, and the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Center was born. The center offers food, new and gently used clothing and household items including bedding, linens, dishes and glassware. In addition to items that generous supporters donate, Catholic Charities provides funding for the center to buy food from the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, where every dollar purchases the equivalent of $17 spent in a grocery store. As vital as food is, everyone needs personal items such as soap, razors, shampoo and other hygiene products, and the center distributes these, free of charge, to registered client households as well.
