Catholic Charities grants to Saint Martin Center have helped over 150 different families and individuals so far this year with utility bills, transportation, and obtaining official identification cards which enable them to seek jobs and public assistance. The grants also funded emergency assistance for some of these same needs including utilities and transportation, as well as for prescriptions and rent. These resources allowed the center to help people who might otherwise be turned away and subsequently face evictions, loss of utilities, and health-threatening situations. The demand for these services continues and is often from people who did not foresee their emergency situation. There is also a need for rental assistance. We continue to encourage our financial literacy programs to help clients prepare for emergencies, but we also know that this isn’t the only solution, and it doesn’t fix all issues.
