When a person has been victimized by abuse, suffers from mental illness or has experienced significant loss and failure in life, he or she will be reluctant to trust others – even those who want to help. The case managers at the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell understand this, and that’s why they take a long-term approach to helping people change their lives. Working only with those who have demonstrated that they are committed to improving their lives, “life advocates,” as they’re known at the center, provide guidance, advocacy, interventions and support for up to two years. Funds are used to cover a portion of staff salaries, and also to pay for expenses for individual and group support interventions. The reason that our work is so successful is because of the trust and working relationships formed between staff and program participants. It takes repeated contacts within the homes and in other areas of participants’ lives in order for the person to develop trust in our advocate staff. These contacts take time and commitment – and inevitably money. The services we offer are not available elsewhere. They are only available here because of the support of Catholic Charities.
